Kodiak Brown Bear Viewing
The world-famous Kodiak Brown bear is one of the largest subspecies of bears, a title shared only with the Polar bear, which is similar in size. A large male Kodiak bear can weight up to 1,500 pounds and stand over 10 feet tall when on his hind legs, and 5 feet when on all four legs. The Kodiak bear lives exclusively on the islands in the Kodiak Archipelago, including Afognak Island. There are about 3,500 Kodiak bears, a density of about 0.7 bears per square mile.
At Afognak Wilderness Lodge, you can experience unforgettable Brown bear viewing opportunities right here at the lodge, in June and early July. Join us on a hike along the Waterfall trail, approximately half a mile inland, where you'll follow a river boasting a pink salmon run, perfect for observing bears in their natural habitat as they catch fish.
Led by experienced guides, this up-close and personal experience gives unique opportunities for encounters with these magnificent creatures. While bear sightings cannot be guaranteed, the scenic beauty of the hike, surrounded by flourishing flora and fauna, ensures a memorable excursion.
Our Bear viewing is available right at our Kodiak Lodge and part of our All-Inclusive package!
