The Best Time to Visit Alaska

A beer pops her head out of the water during the best time to visit Alaska.

Many people planning a trip to the "Land of the Midnight Sun" may be wondering, "When is the best time to visit Alaska?" The truth is that Alaska is an excellent vacation destination no matter what time of the year, but finding the best time will depend significantly on what you want to experience and where. For those hoping to visit Afognak Wilderness Lodge on the Kodiak Islands, it's worth considering that we are open from May 20 through September 20. It's no coincidence that we've chosen those dates to host hikers, anglers, nature lovers, and other outdoor enthusiasts. Since our lodge is geared towards summer activities, we're a little biased in saying summer is the best time to visit Alaska. Now that you know when we'll be here for you let's take a closer look at what to expect between May and September for a wilderness vacation.

Afognak Wilderness Lodge in Kodiak, Alaska

While we are not technically in the city of Kodiak, Alaska, it's noteworthy that the surrounding area is colloquially known as the Kodiak Islands and Afognak is one of the finest! With over 50,000 acres, Afognak Island State Park is our favorite playground and easily accessible via plane or boat. This idyllic and iconic recreation area is perfect for those seeking a casually adventurous journey amid dense forests and seemingly endless ocean views. Although many travelers will say July is absolutely the best time to visit Alaska, the climate is relatively similar from May through September. However, Kodiak weather is unpredictable, just like anywhere else in Alaska. For example, it's not uncommon to find yourself under several weeks' worth of clear blue skies only to have a foggy rainstorm push its way through without a moment's notice. Either way, you're bound to have an unforgettable adventure!

Alaska Wilderness Lodge Vacations on Afognak Island

The best time to visit Alaska has been a longstanding traveler debate since the first vacation lodges started to pop up many decades ago. As we mentioned above, it seems to always come down to what you want to do during your adventures. So if you're looking for a summer retreat to the "Last Frontier" rife with fishing, photography, wildlife, and fun, then Afognak Wilderness Lodge amid the famous Kodiak Islands is the place you want to be.
