Afognak Wilderness Lodge | award-winning Alaska lodging & nature tours | Alaska Travel Tips

If you’re planning on traveling to Alaska for the first time, naturally you’re excited about exploring this vast, wild, and beautiful state that’s like no other. Whether your plans include doing some freshwater fishing in Kodiak or renting a car for a sightseeing adventure, we’ve got a few travel tips that will help you get the most out of your visit.

Dress for Comfort

The dress code for Alaska is “casual” so pack your most comfortable clothing & shoes and plan on dressing in layers. On an average day, you can experience a variety of weather conditions so plan on layering up with a t-shirt, sweater or fleece jacket, topped off by a quality raincoat. If you plan on doing a lot of walking, be sure to pack at least a second pair of sneakers or lightweight hiking boots.

Take Along All Your Camera Gear

There is wildlife and amazing scenery everywhere in Alaska so take along your best camera and be sure it’s always charged. It’s also wise to take along a couple of extra storage cards as you’ll find yourself snapping pictures at every turn you make. It’s also a good idea to pack a backup battery and to carry a portable charger, just in case.

Talk to the Locals

Alaskans are very proud of their state and love to show it off to visitors so talk to the locals! Whether you need directions or want some advice about what boat tour to use for Kodiak whale watching, you can bet your bottom dollar that the locals have the best advice! By connecting with the locals, you can gain some insight into the Alaskan way of life and learn why the 49th state is different from everyplace else in the U.S.

Respect the Wildlife

There is an array of wildlife to discover in Alaska including many wild animals. It’s important that you’re careful and respectful towards any animals you encounter. Never feed or approach a wild animal and always keep your distance. If you’re in the wilderness enjoying a bite to eat, always use a food locker or store food in your vehicle and leave the area cleaner than you found it.

Visit Afognak Island

Afognak Island is considered a “must see” for anyone traveling to Alaska. With an abundance of land and marine wildlife, this second-largest island in the Kodiak Archipelago is a popular destination for fishing, Kodiak Island photography, and quiet retreats.
