With its iconic mountains, sprawling forests, and abundant wildlife, Alaska is an excellent place for a memorable vacation. There are many wonders in “The Last Frontier,” but perhaps none as mesmerizing as the northern lights. For generations, travelers worldwide have made their way to Alaska to see the celestial display illuminate the sky, and Afognak Wilderness Lodge is offering you a front-row seat. But before you start packing your bags, we’d like to share a few tips to make the experience more rewarding.
Alaskan Northern Lights Forecast
The northern light’s most accurate forecasting station resides at the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska – Fairbanks. And while Fairbanks is relatively far from Afognak Island, you can check their website anytime for the latest reports. Another source for reliable northern lights forecasts is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration which uses the Space Weather Prediction Center for short-term projections.
Best Time to See the Northern Lights in Alaska
Although it’s widely accepted that the best time to see the northern lights in Alaska falls between mid-September and late April, you’ll find opportunities for a glimpse at any time of the year— assuming the sun isn’t out. There is usually plenty of activity in the sky from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. Peak visibility occurs in March.
Where to Watch the Northern Lights
The best thing about watching the northern lights on Afognak Island is the lack of light pollutants. Cities and towns have many lights coming from businesses, billboards, and cars. Thankfully, our pristine island has nothing of the sort and offers immaculate night skies devoid of such obstructions.
