Marine photography in Alaska’s Kodiak Islands
Marine photography (professional or amateur) in Alaska’s Kodiak Islands area is unmatched by nearly anywhere else in North America - or the world, for that matter - because of the abundance of saltwater and freshwater creatures just waiting to be caught on camera, whether you are a professional or marine photographer.

And if you choose to come to this marine wildlife oasis about 250 miles south of Anchorage, the only choice is to stay at Afognak Wilderness Lodge, Alaska’s premier vacation lodge and the only full-service lodge or residence in Afognak State Park, one of the jewels for marine photography, fishing and wildlife in the world.

We’ll assume you know about the incredible fishing here in the Kodiak Islands Archipelago as well as all the inland wildlife such as Kodiak bears, etc. (if not, take a look elsewhere on our site), so let’s focus on the marine photography opportunities for those who prefer to spend their time that way on vacation in Alaska. We have hosted many international film crews to our lodge because of the abundance of land and sea wildlife. Our daily rates include access to all boats excursions and kayak trips with Coast Guard-licensed guides.

Afognak Island Marine Life

In the sea, you will not find a larger collection of whale species anywhere, including Killer Whales, Gray Whales, Humpbacks, Finbacks and Minke, which all migrate through the area. Sometimes they travel nearly 40 to a pod, which is a sight you’ll never forget. Also prevalent are sea lions, seals, sea otters and porpoises and off-shore birdlife such as Tufted and Horned Puffins, Cormorant, Auklets, Murres, Loons, Petrals, Shearwaters and various Sea Gulls, Terns and Ducks. We haven’t even addressed all the beautiful natural surroundings and the stunning photographic options.

Marine Photography in Alaska

Frankly, the beauty of marine photography in this area of Alaska is that you never know what else you might see in the fresh and saltwater habitats. And if your marine photography party has specific interests, we can tailor the day to your desires. Most locations are within minutes of the lodge, and we can arrange kayak trips to areas few people rarely get to see. We have multiple cabin cruisers as well as several skiffs and U.S.C.G. certified captains/guides.

And don’t let the misconception of Alaskan weather fool you – it generally is very pleasant in the area during our open summer months, with the temperatures often in the 70s. And very few mosquitoes!

Are you ready to enjoy all the benefits of marine photography in southwest Alaska? The Afognak Wilderness Lodge is the best place to stay when enjoying eco tours of Alaska, both inland and on the water. We have been catering to sport-fisherman, marine photographers, nature lovers and vacationers since 1974 and have very limited space so we can focus on your every need. We also provide what we call “rustic elegance” – that is, you will enjoy all that the outdoors has to offer while not sacrificing any of those accommodations you are used to back home – be it satellite TV, fax, wireless Internet access and some of the best local cuisine you’ll ever eat.

You will play hard, eat big and sleep deep. It is the only choice for those who want a casual yet active and adventurous day of marine photography in the freedom of wilderness and sea. This is why we have been named a Top 100 Rustic Vacation Spot in North American by USA Today, among many awards.

For a marine photography (and more) experience of a lifetime, call lodge owners Shannon, Josh and Luke Randall today at 866-978-4417 in the U.S. or 360-799-3250 for more information or to make reservations. We are open May 20-Sept. 20 with no minimum stay required.
